When it comes to capturing the magic of a wedding, professional photography ensures that the big moments—the vows, the first dance, the kiss—are preserved in timeless images. But what about the countless spontaneous moments in between? That’s where guest photos come in, and today the easiest, cheapest, and most reliable way to collect them is with a QR code.

We spoke with Kari Bjorn, owner of Kari Bjorn Photography in Connecticut. Kari’s team offers photography, videography, and photo booth services from NYC to Boston, and he has seen first-hand how QR codes are transforming the way couples and guests share wedding memories.

QR Codes: Familiar and Fast

“A QR code is the fastest and most reliable way to share images with guests,” Kari explains. “It’s also universally known and understood at this point. A few years ago we’d have to explain to older folks how to use them, but everyone understands how to use them now.”

That universal familiarity is what makes QR codes so powerful. There’s no need for apps, logins, or explanations. Guests simply scan and share, creating a smooth experience for everyone.

From Hashtags to QR Codes

Over a decade ago, couples would set up wedding hashtags to collect guest photos. Guests would upload snapshots to Instagram with tags like #SmithWedding2013, creating a shared gallery of candid memories.

But times have changed.

“Now, all the hashtags are essentially taken and people are less likely to post photos on their curated Instagram grid,” Kari says. “This means QR codes work way better. The couple doesn’t need to spend hours deciding on a hashtag that isn’t already taken, or ask guests to alter their grid to share photos.”

QR codes eliminate the guesswork and hassle, offering a private, dedicated space for wedding memories.

The Disposable Camera Days

Before hashtags and QR codes, there were disposable cameras on every table. Popular in the 1980s and 1990s, these little cameras gave guests the chance to snap candid shots, later developed into film prints.

“Disposable cameras are making a bit of a comeback now, with film photography trending in the wedding space,” Kari notes. “The problem is they cost a lot—about $40–$45 per camera, processing, and scanning. Cheaper alternatives exist, but they’re unreliable. Most of them have been sitting in warehouses, and film and chemicals have expiration dates.”

The result? Couples end up paying more for fewer usable pictures.

Why QR Codes Beat Everything Else

From hashtags to hashtags, from film cameras to Instagram, wedding trends for guest photo sharing have come and gone. But QR codes offer what couples today need most: simplicity, affordability, and reliability.

“For the cheapest and most reliable way to get guests to share photos from a wedding day, a QR code beats everything,” Kari says.
